If you’re planning a trip to Isla Mujeres then you will most likely be wondering when the best time to visit Isla Mujeres is.
After visiting in May and June and having two completely different experiences, we knew that we had to write this information to help others that are travelling to Isla Mujeres.
In this guide you will find some advice on the off peak seasons so that you can avoid overcrowding as well as the cheapest time to visit Isla Mujeres too.
As Isla Mujeres is an incredible place to go swimming with whale sharks, we also share some of the best times to see them and go snorkelling as well as the hottest time of year to visit.

Off Peak Seasons in Isla Mujeres
The off peak season generally is around May – November but this does also align with the rainy / hurricane season. If you’re looking to visit during an off peak season but want to avoid the rain as much as possible then you’re best to visit in either May or June.
Cheapest Time to visit Isla Mujeres
Depending on where you are travelling from will completely depend on what will be the cheapest time to travel to Isla Mujeres. Generally speaking, you will want to avoid the peak seasons between December – April.
If you’re looking for a cheap break away then March is definitely not the best time to visit. During March is Spring Break so you will find that prices increase a lot.
Often, you will find that May and June are the cheapest and best times to visit. You will need to fly into Cancun to get to Isla Mujeres so it is best to search for this airport. However, you can use the calendar below to search when would be the best time to get from your local airport to Cancun airport before getting the ferry to Isla Mujeres.
Best Time to See Whale Sharks Isla Mujeres
The whale shark season in Isla Mujeres tends to be between May – September so you will be able to see them during this time. However, May & June are usually the best months to see them as they are just beginning to arrive in the area. We would recommend not going snorkelling with whale sharks in Isla Mujeres during September as there are not as many whale sharks where they are moving on so you are less likely to see them.
Hottest Time of Year to Visit Isla Mujeres
August is often the hottest month in Isla Mujeres but this is during the rainy season so you will find that there are a lot of rain showers. The temperature can reach highs of 33 degrees / 91 degrees Fahrenheit so it is very hot and humid this time of year. Equally, July and September are also slightly cooler than August but not by much so they are also very warm months to visit Isla Mujeres too.

We’ve shared the highest and lowest temperatures, if you can expect some rain, on and off peak seasons and what the sea temperatures will be too. This is all so important if you’re planning to visit some amazing dive sites in Isla Mujeres.
Weather in Isla Mujeres in January
January is one of the coldest months to visit Isla Mujeres but it is still very warm if you’re comparing it to Scotland, where we live.
You can expect high temperatures of 27 degrees / 80.6 degrees Fahrenheit so it is still warm enough for shorts and a t-shirt. The best part about this is that it is outside of the rainy season too so you won’t need to worry about any downpours.
There are low temperatures of 20 degrees / 68 degrees Fahrenheit so for some, you may need a light jumper for the evenings. This does depend on your heat tolerance though so it might be worth packing one just to be sure.
If you’re planning to do some diving or snorkelling in Isla Mujeres then the average sea temperature is around 26 degrees / 78.8 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a really good temperature to do some water activities so you will be best to take advantage of it.
The only downside of visiting Isla Mujeres in January is that it is during the high season so it can get very busy. Due to this, the beaches can get a little bit crowded so it is best to book everything in advance to avoid disappointment.
Weather in Isla Mujeres in February
February in Isla Mujeres is very similar to January where you can expect high temperatures of 27 degrees / 80.6 degrees and low temperatures of 20 degrees / 68 degrees Fahrenheit.
It is still quite warm so you will get to enjoy some beautiful weather during the day perfect for sunbathing without getting too warm.
As we are still outside of the rainy season, you would expect it to be very busy with tourists. However, it is actually quite a low tourist season so you may find that it is not very crowded.
You will find that Feburary is a great time to visit Isla Mujeres because it is often when the Isla Carnival takes place. For this reason, February is a great time to visit Isla Mujeres as you will get to enjoy plenty of dancing, culture and performances.
Similar to January, it is also a really good time to enjoy some water activities and you can expect the average sea temperature to be around 26 degrees / 78.8 degrees Fahrenheit.
Overall, February is a great time to visit Isla Mujeres as you will get to enjoy the carnival, low tourist season, warm temperatures and no rain.
Isla Mujeres Weather in March
The temperatures start to increase in Isla Mujeres in March and you will begin to see high temperatures of 28 degrees / 82.4 degrees Fahrenheit.
If you’re a sun worshiper then March is a great time to visit Isla Mujeres. The low temperatures get to around 22 degrees / 71.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Even at the lower end of the temperatures, it is still very warm in Isla Mujeres so this is a perfect time to visit.
As March is still outside of the rainy season, it is still pretty busy and it hits around the medium mark for tourist season. March is when Spring Break falls in America so you will find lots of Americans visiting to let their hair down from school.
As a lot of spring breakers head to Cancun, it is very easy to get a day trip from Cancun to Isla Mujeres so you will find that the island is quite busy due to it.
The average sea temperatures are around 26 degrees / 78.8 degrees Fahrenheit which is a really lovely warm temperature. If you’re planning to do a few different dives in Isla Mujeres then you won’t need to worry about getting too cold.
March is a really good time to visit and as it is also the discovery day of Isla Mujeres too. Due to this, it is a really special month for those that live there and a great time to visit for any party travellers too.
Weather in Isla Mujeres in April
April is a little more quiet on Isla Mujeres because the spring breakers have gone back to school. The temperatures hit highs of around 29 degrees / 84.2 degrees Fahrenheit so it will be very warm.
The lowest temperatures you should see will be around 23 degrees / 73.4 degrees Fahrenheit so you won’t need to worry about a light jumper at all.
It is still quite busy during April in Isla Mujeres as it is the last month before the rainy season begins. We would say that April is still a medium peak season but it is not as busy as March that’s for sure!
Sea temperatures average around 27 degrees / 71.6 degrees Fahrenheit so you will still get to enjoy the very warm water.
Isla Mujeres Weather in May
As the beginning of the rainy season rolls in, so does the whale shark season! Even though the rainy season begins, you will still get to see high temperatures of 30 degrees / 86 degrees Fahrenheit.
There are usually around 17 days of rain but the downpours are often short so it isn’t much to worry about. Amy visited Isla Mujeres during this time and didn’t experience many downpours at all and didn’t dampen her experience (forgive the pun!).
You can expect to see low temperatures of around 25 degrees / 77 degrees Fahrenheit so it is very warm during this time of year.
As May is the beginning of the whale shark season in Isla Mujeres, this is a great time to visit despite that it can be a little bit wetter.
Another perk of visiting in May is that it is outside of the peak tourist season too. You will find a lot of tourists go for whale shark season but it is nowhere near as busy as March & April that’s for sure.
If you’re planning on going swimming with the whale sharks then you’ll be pleased to know that the average sea temperatures are around 27 degrees / 80.6 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a really warm, comfortable temperature for water activities on the island.
Personally, we would recommend visiting in May above most other months as it is much quieter, you can swim with the whale sharks, the temperatures are warm but not unbearable.
Weather in Isla Mujeres in June
Similar to May, you will still get to enjoy the whale shark season but as it is deeper into the rainy season, you will experience a few more downpours than in May.
As it gets further into the rainy season, the humidity also increases within Isla Mujeres even though the temperature is very similar. You will see high temperatures of around 31 degrees / 87.8 degrees Fahrenheit so if you’re comfortable with some of the rain then June is a great time to visit.
The lower temperatures are a bit higher than in May with lows of around 25 degrees / 77 degrees Fahrenheit. The weather in Isla Mujeres in June is absolutely beautiful but it will get very warm so make sure you arrange accommodation with air-conditioning.
If you’re wanting to go and see the whale sharks then you can expect to see sea temperatures of around 28 degrees / 82.4 degrees Fahrenheit.
June is the official time for hurricane season but generally speaking, this is not something you need to worry about until around September / October. There are much less tourists around during this time of year due to the rainy season but it is still a great time to visit.
Weather in Isla Mujeres in July
The weather in Isla Mujeres in July tends to be very similar to June with high temperatures of 32 degrees / 89.6 degrees Fahrenheit. The lowest temperatures generally tend to be around 25 degrees / 77 degrees Fahrenheit so even when it is cooler, it is still very warm.
July is still the rainy season and you can expect a lot more downpours during this month. However, the plus side of this is that there won’t be as many tourists.
You will still be able to swim with whale sharks during July is Isla Mujeres so if you’re visiting the island then you may want to take advantage of this.
The average sea temperature will be around 29 degrees / 84.2 degrees Fahrenheit so despite the rain, the sea temperatures will be very warm.
It does get incredibly hot during this time of year which may be unbearable for some people but surprisingly, it is a medium tourist season. If this sounds like you then it may not be the best time to visit Isla Mujeres for you. At least, the rainy showers will cool you down!
Weather in Isla Mujeres in August
August is one of the hottest months to visit Isla Mujeres and the humidity is very high so we wouldn’t recommend visiting during this month for anyone that struggles with the heat.
You can expect to see high temperatures of around 32 degrees / 89.6 degrees Fahrenheit so it is a very warm time of year for Isla Mujeres. The low temperatures are slightly less than July getting to around 25 degrees / 77 degrees Fahrenheit. It is slightly cooler but not by much so you will need a lot of air conditioning.
As we are getting deeper into the hurricane season, you will find that there are a lot more showers around this time but it will be very humid.
You’ll be unsurprised to learn that this is considered one of the peak seasons for Isla Mujeres so you may find a lot of tourists on the island.
However, with sea temperatures averaging around 29 degrees / 84.2 degrees Fahrenheit so the sea will be very warm. There are still some whale sharks around this time of year but not as many as there are during May / June because we’re getting right to the end of the whale shark season in Isla Mujeres.
Weather in Isla Mujeres in September
September is the last month where you can see the whale sharks in Isla Mujeres but you will find that there are a lot less of them. If you’re visiting Isla Mujeres to see the whale sharks then this is not the best time to visit the island.
The heat starts to lower in September as does the rain, so it will be a little bit cooler this time of year. The high temperatures reach around 31 degrees / 87.8 degrees Fahrenheit so it is still quite warm.
We are coming towards the end of the hurricane season too so the humidity will start to decrease compared to August but you will find that it is still pretty high.
The low temperatures will hit around 25 degrees / 77 degrees Fahrenheit so this will be the same as August. Due to this still being a very hot time of year to visit Isla Mujeres, there won’t be a lot of tourists and is still considered as the off peak season.
We wouldn’t really recommend swimming with whale sharks during this time of year because your chances of seeing them are much less. However, if you do decide to take the chance then the sea is quite warm with average sea temperatures in August of around 29 degrees / 84.2 degrees Fahrenheit.
Whilst it is a really hot time of year to visit Isla Mujeres, we wouldn’t say that it is the best time to visit because it is very warm so the heat can become unbearable to those not used to it, it is the peak of hurricane season and the chances of seeing whale sharks is much less.
Weather in Isla Mujeres in October
The temperatures start to decrease in Isla Mujeres in October so it will start to get a little bit cooler. The high temperatures will reach around 30 degrees / 86 degrees Fahrenheit so whilst it is still very hot, it is cooler than the last few months.
Low temperatures will start to drop soon which will get down to around 24 degrees / 75.2 degrees Fahrenheit so the weather in Isla Mujeres will begin to be a little more bearable for those that are not as used to the heat.
This is still during the peak of the hurricane season so the humidity will be quite hard at the time even if the temperatures are a bit lower.
As it is the high season for hurricanes, it is the off peak season for tourists so you won’t find as many people around at this time and there is a reason for that.
The sea temperatures are slightly lower this time of year in Isla Mujeres reaching on average around 28 degrees / 82.4 degrees Fahrenheit.
Overall, we wouldn’t recommend visiting around this time of year purely because of the hurricane season so it is not the best time to visit Isla Mujeres.
Weather in Isla Mujeres in November
Being the month for day of the dead (Dia de los Muertos), November is a great time to visit Isla Mujeres or Mexico in general.
In November, the weather has cooled off slightly and the heat is much more bearable with high temperatures of 29 degrees / 84.2 degrees Fahrenheit.
The rainy season will now have come to an end and in November, you are just at the end of the hurricane season too so it is a really good time to visit Isla Mujeres.
You’ll find that the low temperatures drop to around 22 degrees / 71.6 degrees Fahrenheit. It is still quite warm but those that are used to hot temperatures then you may want to pack a light jacket for the evenings.
This is somewhat of a peak season for Isla Mujeres so there will not be as many tourists around which is great for any other bloggers like us that don’t want any crowded photos!
For anyone that wants to enjoy some diving or snorkelling then the water temperature is around 27 degrees / 80.6 degrees Fahrenheit so it is a little cooler than it is throughout most of the year but still comfortable temperatures.
November is a really great time to visit Isla Mujeres especially if you’re looking for more peace and relaxation.
Weather in Isla Mujeres in December
December is a bit of a strange time for visiting Isla Mujeres because for the first half of the month you will find that it is fairly quiet but then towards the end, it can be pretty busy so it is a very high tourist season.
The high temperatures average around 28 degrees / 82.4 degrees Fahrenheit with low temperatures of 21 degrees / 69.8 degrees Fahrenheit.
For anyone diving in Isla Mujeres, you will find that the average sea temperatures are around 27 degrees / 80.6 degrees Fahrenheit so it is one of the coldest months for watersports.
This is a great month to get away to Isla Mujeres but you can expect it to be pretty busy towards the end of December.
When is the Best Time to Go to Isla Mujeres?
It will completely depend on what is important to you when visiting a new destination as to when the best time to visit Isla Mujeres is.
If you’re looking for some peace and relaxation then generally speaking November and the start of December is the best time to go outside of the rainy season.
For anyone that is visiting Isla Mujeres specifically for whale shark season then May & June are the best months to see these beautiful creatures. Even though the season runs from May – September, your chances of seeing them are much great in May & June.
If you’re looking to avoid the rainy season in Isla Mujeres then you will want to visit between December – April as these months you are very unlikely to experience any showers.
There are so many things to do on the island that it is best to spend 2 days or so in Isla Mujeres. You will have an amazing time on the island but this guide will help ensure that you visit during the time that is best for you.
