It is easier than people think to plan romantic but cheap days out. No matter how long you’ve been in a relationship, making sure that you have regular dates is super important. However, once you’ve been together for a while, it can become easy to get stuck in a rut and do the same dates or skip them all together. It’s important to get out of the house and your comfort zone too!

This list will provide you with some great ideas to get planning your next date. All the ideas that we have provided has come from our very own date jar! If you like these ideas then why not treat yourselves to a date jar and have a unique, spontaneous date EVERY SINGLE TIME?!

You can easily plan plenty of cheap romantic days out using this list. This is a photo of Liam and I having dinner at TGI Fridays with a whisky in front of him. Your dates don't need to be dinner everytime so we've created this list so that your dates can be more unique.

Day Out at the Beach

It doesn’t have to be the summer to go to the beach. We don’t know why but everyone seems to think that you can only enjoy the beach during the summer. Even if you just go for a walk down the beach you can still have an amazing date.

If you’re planning this during the summer then it will definitely be a cheap and romantic day out for you both. You can enjoy some ice cream in the sunshine, catch a tan, people watch together and enjoy a beer or two! If it is during the winter, wrap up warm, take a flask of tea / coffee and have a wander down the beach to see what you can find. We love to go out walking together because this is the one time where we are free of distractions and screens. We get to spend some quality time together and have deep conversations.

Take the Train to Somewhere New

We love getting a train somewhere new because it can be as romantic as we want and they are cheap days out. We got the train to somewhere different and took this image of the train tracks when we got back. The sunset was so beautiful we couldn't help ourselves.

This is one of our favourite dates from our date jar (which you can purchase here) because it leaves the spontaneity up to you. When we pulled this date out of the jar, we had no idea where to go and we just picked a place on Trainline and went for it. It was around 30 minutes away from us and tickets weren’t too expensive either. We did not do any prior research so that it was a surprise when we arrived. The funniest thing about this was that it was an absolute disaster.

We were hoping to arrive somewhere, explore the area, go for dinner and maybe do an activity or two. Typical of us, we picked the one place that has absolutely NOTHING to do. Their town centre was a road of houses with a couple of corner shops and a pub that was shut! No, we are not kidding! We still laugh about it now and even though we didn’t do much, it is still one of our favourite dates that we had. If you want to research the place before you go then at least you will have an idea of what you’d like to do when you get there. For us, we absolutely LOVED not knowing what to expect!

Picnic

This is one of the best budget dates because you can take as much or as little as you want. Find an area on the map in your local town or city where you’re going to have the picnic. Grab a blanket, some supplies and away you go! We managed to get a really cute portable picnic table from Amazon. It has two slots for wine / prosecco glasses and a bottle. This is amazing because you don’t have to worry about uneven ground spilling your drink! We wouldn’t want that now would we?!

Most of the time, we will take along lots of picky bits such as sausage rolls, sandwiches, strawberries, crisps, carrots & hummus etc. We absolutely love these kind of days because we try to avoid screen time and just go into our own little bubble. It is perfect for if you’re trying to plan dates for your anniversary or valentines on a budget. Your partner will really appreciate the extra effort that has gone in to plan this and make them feel like they’re in a movie!

Go Play Pool

Playing pool is another one of our favourite dates simply because it is cheap and easy. You can spend an hour here or all day if you like! We often try to find a local pub or bar that doesn’t have many people so that we can just act foolish and feel like we have a bit more privacy. Usually pool tables only cost £1 per play. However, you can also find some snooker halls that charge per the hour which often works out much cheaper.

We've played pool many times together but the quieter area the better in our opinion. We get to have more privacy with time to talk and laugh together.

If both of you don’t have experience playing pool then this is the perfect time to learn it together. However, if one of you is a bit of a pool shark then you can take the time to teach your partner how to play and have fun at the same time. We often order a couple of drinks when we’re playing and walk home with one of us boasting that they won! We play pool quite frequently together and love that we can go play during the week as it’s a good date activity to do together at night and also when we’re on a budget.

Roller / Ice Skating

These kinds of dates are definitely the most fun if one or both of you are terrible at skating. We have had so many laughs at one of us falling over it’s unbelievable! Most people will have a roller or ice skating rinks nearby but if not then you should be able to easily get a bus or train to somewhere that does. During the winter especially, you will start to see a lot of ice rinks pop up making them more accessible.

Another positive to going roller/ice skating is that there is minimal planning involved. You will often be able to just turn up on the day and go for it. They are usually quite affordable and you will be able to spend a good few hours here too. Most rinks will often have different events on as well! If you do want to plan in advance, make sure to check their website to see if there are any roller discos or adults only sessions. Nothing more hilarious than a boozy skate around the rink!

Go Play Mini Golf

Portal mini golf with its neon lights and Mario themed round.

Even if you live in a really small town, more often than not you will find a mini golf place nearby. If you have friends that are couples then you could make it a double date and spend the day out together. We’ve been to quite a few different mini golf places now including ones that are neon or themed. No matter what you have close by, you will have a great time.

As we live close to Edinburgh, we often look for cheap things to do in Edinburgh for our date nights such as this mini golf. It’s always worth researching what is cheap to do in the cities near you!

Mini golf usually ranges between £5 – £15 for a session. However, the more expensive usually means that it is a little unique in some way or that it includes food or drink. Nearby, we have a few mini golf places where you can get a meal and two drinks included. It’s often worth paying that little bit extra to get this included. That way you can make a bit more of a day of it!

Go to a Museum

Most often museums are free so this is definitely a cheap activity that you can do during the day. We live in Edinburgh and are very fortunate to have a plethora of free museums nearby. However, if you do live a little bit further out then you can always get a cheap bus or a train to another town / city close to you. In a museum you can learn some new things together and have plenty to talk about afterwards too!

Exploring a museum together is a great way to spend some quality time and also have some talking points. This photo is from the National Museum of Scotland with its beautiful high ceilings.

If you do need to get a train to a different city or town then once you finish exploring the museum, you can make a full day of it. You can wander around the local area or go for an inexpensive meal/drinks. Remember that dates are what you make it and often the activity that you are doing is irrelevant. It is all about the quality time that you’re spending with each other!

Bar Quiz Night

This is a great affordable date night because often the bar quizzes are free and you will just need to pay for drinks. If you are on a bit of a tight budget then have dinner at home before heading out and then you will only need to pay for what drinks you would like. Often with bar quizzes you will find that there is a prize or cash up for grabs. You need to put your thinking hats on and get involved! Bar quizzes are great fun to enjoy together and test your knowledge. If you have any other couple friends or know any married couples then drag them along with you because they are cheap fun dates for everyone!

Comedy club

We LOVE a comedy club especially because that is where we first met. Unless you live in a big town/city it can be quite tricky to find a comedy club near you. Just make sure to have a little look online and see what comes up. You may find that a local pub or bar has a comedy night coming up. If you live in a bigger area like us, there are usually dedicated comedy clubs with frequent events. If you do live in a smaller town we absolutely love Frugal Confession’s article on 64 Small Town Date Ideas. This will give you plenty of inspiration on what you can do when there isn’t a lot around you!

Brunch morning

Brunch is a great way to spend some romantic time together and they are also cheap days out. You often get food, drink and entertainment included so for the price most of them are really good value. This image is of Amy enjoying Brunch in Edinburgh.

Going for brunch seems to be all the rage nowadays! It really is a great way to spend time together. Brunch can be expensive at times so make sure to do your research beforehand. It doesn’t need to be pricey to be good! Often you can book a package online which includes food and drinks for a few hours. You will also find that some brunches include entertainment such as drag brunches, karaoke or something of the like. It is usually a pretty cheap day out where you can show your inner romantic side by planning this quality time together in advance! Most women absolutely love a brunch morning so if you’re looking to impress your lady then often you will find that this is a winner!
